This map was developed to identify possible roadways of concern in
Montgomery County, Kentucky. The analysis was conducted using QGIS
3.34.2 and uses a combination spatial analyses. Crash data ranges from
January 2015 to December 2024, a full ten-year period. Interstate
crashes were omitted from this analysis.
Use the below legend to toggle crashes by severity as well as the high
injury network.
After attributing crashes to their respective roadways, networks where
crashes resulting in a death or serious injury can be identified via
database management systems The result is the below table, presented
on this map as the high injury network. While this is not a precise
indicator of problematic corridors, it can focus efforts and attention
for potential highway safety improvements within Montgomery County.
The below table indicates the statistics that were taken to develop
this high injury network. Two or greater number of fatal and suspected
serious injury crashes occuring on a network was identified as being a
high injury network.
Data analyzed using database management in
QGIS as well as linear referencing tools to overlay the table on
KYTC's spatial roadway datasets.
Additionally, crashes were summed up by roadway type, which the below
table showcases. The top roadway types with the most crasehes
occrurring on them are KY routes and US routes, with more than 68% of
all the ten-year period of crashes occuring on those two types alone.
While this seems alarming, it is important to consider that these are
the most travelled corridors in the county, and therefore more crashes
will occur on those routes due to the sheer number of people using
those routes daily.
It is still important to consider that there are additional reasons
why crashes occur on these roadways, outside of sheer number of
roadway users. Signaling, speed control, innovative intersections, and
additonal safety measures can significantly reduce traffic accidents
on these highways alone and should be considered.
Finally, a complete summary of this data can be found in the below table, which is sorted from largest Total Crash numbers to the smallest total crash numbers. Additionally, you can view statistics on individual segments in the above interactive map.
